Make a difference in education. My one and only year in purgatory called kindergarten gave the knowledge needed for this story. Please don’t be confused I loved all my kiddos, but 18; 4, 5, and then 6 years is a lot! I was only the ripe age of 23. I know, what your thinking, young with fresh ideas. Wrong!!!!! I felt like I was in the twilight zone learning everything for the first time. They did not teach us this in college. Classroom management being the biggest and toughest concept to master. If you do not know, those little kiddos do not listen the first time. Nope, it does not happen like in movies. I felt like I was lied to. Why didn’t they tell me this? I would not have applied for kindergarten, oh but wait I would have because I was a poor recovering college kid.
Some of the best medicine was knowing other kindergarten teachers with experience suffered too. I say suffered, but a better term would be were served with lemons as well. As a teacher you become good at making lemonade. This one teacher performing her magic as she always did and does to this day had a precious baby. The student was a bit of a challenge. The student was having some toiletings issues too. I also learned quickly that kindergarten students do have accidents a lot more than I thought, again I felt lied to. This morning the student showed up bright eyed and bushy tailed. In that exquisitely fat backpacked loomed a surprise for the neighbor teacher. While getting folders out for snack and lunch the teacher stubbled upon the diapers. Yes, I said diapers! If memory serves correctly the note read that the student could “wear these at school”. Well, that might not be a huge issue if the child had a disability or medical condition that would warrant such a need. The child did not. The teacher was expected to change diapers multiple times a day. Well, this made my day. I was use to students trying to eat shaving cream and this teacher has a diaper bag for a student. I wished I was making this up, but I am not. Needless to say the students guardians were contacted and situation rectified. Make a difference in education and change diapers while teaching a general education class for a student who does not have any needs.
College students get ready. Will you be the next diaper bag host to a student who has no needs? Make a difference in education.
